There will be a summer school in synchrotron radiation science at Chester College and Daresbury Laboratory from the 31st August to 10th September 2004. The course will cover theory and experiment, there will be a programme of six days lectures and three days practical hands on synchrotron use. The school is aimed at research students and recently appointed PDRAs engaged in relevant research projects. The programme is wide ranging and dynamic. The cost per participant for the one and a half week course, including all accommodation and most meals, is expected to be in the region of £1000.00. However, we hope to have a number of student bursaries available which will cover most of the cost for each eligible participant. We also hope to obtain EU funding to support non-UK students travelling from countries attached to the framework 5 programme.

We expect to be able to accommodate approximately 30 students and post-doctoral researchers, so please apply early; expressions of interest already exceed the number of places we have available.

Applications should be made in writing, on one side of A4, to the following address, to arrive not later than Friday 30 April.

Each application, for one student or PDRA, should include the following information:
  • Name, address, telephone/fax numbers, e-mail address for contact
  • Name, telephone and e-mail of research supervisor
  • Status (PhD student, PDRA, etc.) and date of starting in this post
  • Source of funding for research programme (for bursary eligibility etc.)
  • Subject of research and a statement of relevance of the SR summer school
  • Whether participation is dependent on receiving a bursary (full or partial)
  • Supporting statement by the supervisor
  • Signatures of applicant and supervisor

In addition, where there is more than one application from a research group, the supervisor should provide a statement, on a separate page, assessing the relative priorities of the applicants, since we expect we will not be able to offer places to all who apply. The decision will be based on criteria of eligibility, relevance, and balance of interests of participants, and not on a first-come-first-served basis.

We acknowledge support by the European Community - Research Infrastructure Action under the FP6 "Structuring the European Research Area" Programme (through the Integrated Infrastructure Initiative "Integrating Activity on Synchrotron and Free Electron Laser Science").
