Check Sheet for Access to the SRS

1. Do you have a valid DL site ID card ?

Cards issued before January 2004 are no longer valid. Cards issued since January 2004 are valid for three years and the expiry date is printed on the front.

If you do not have a card then it is essential that you visit the Laboratory IN NORMAL WORKING HOURS to obtain one – the facility to issue cards is not available in the evenings and at weekends.

2. Have you registered ?

Registration is essential for every beam time slot because it provides our audit trail for payment of expenses as well as important safety information.

You can register in advance by downloading the form and faxing it in. We must have a PI signature for every experimenter before we pay expenses.

3. Have you seen the Safety Video in this Allocation Period?

Under the Written System of Work associated with the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999, users must watch the SRS Safety Video before entering the SRS Controlled Area.

You may view the short video about safety at the Laboratory online before you arrive.

You can watch the video in the reception area when you come on site. If according to our records you have not seen the video in the last AP we will ask you to watch it again and to sign the acknowledgment slip.

4. Access to the SRS Controlled Area

Once you have registered and signed the form confirming that you have seen the safety video your site card will be enabled to allow access to the SRS for the Allocation Period. After the AP, it will be necessary to watch the video again to re-enable the card.

5. Have you submitted an Experimental Risk Assessment (ERA)?

Guidance Notes for the ERA »

The ERA is not ‘valid’ until it is signed off by the Station Scientist.

The main functions of the ERA are :

To capture the safety requirements of the actual work to be done which is frequently different from what has been planned.

To provide DL with accurate information on who is actually on site

To identify the individual(s) available for the duration of the experiment who are responsible for supervision of the users team – the Team Leader. If there will be more than one Team Leader during the run, please attach a duty roster so that we know who to contact in the event of an emergency.

Please DO NOT send in ERAs with only ‘indicative’ information on the experiment

Please DO NOT send in ERAs with pool lists from which the users attending will be drawn.

SRS Stations without a valid ERA will be disabled by the Duty Operators.

6. Have you had a safety session with the Station Scientist including, where appropriate, how to operate X Ray hutches ?

If you are a new user on a station or have not used a station for over 12 months, you must make an arrangement with the Station Scientist to receive basic station safety training before starting work. This will normally take place within normal working hours.
