Appendix 2[ information | group | overlap | 4GLS progress ] On the movement of science between the SRS and DiamondThese worksheets follow different scenarios for the overlap period between the SRS and Diamond. They are viewed from the present SRS stations, and correlated with approximately corresponding Diamond beamlines. In the case of the two imaging beamlines in Phase 1 of Diamond, a progression from an SRS station is shown (9.2 to ID18 and 5.1 to ID6), since there is currently no direct equivalent on the SRS. Continued operation of a SRS beamline is shown in blue, and the first sheet shows the situation for the previously announced overlap period (or “bright” period) of 2 years, with other possibilities shown in the following sheets. The 7 Phase 1 beamlines on Diamond are indicated from their planned user operation date of the start of 2007. Their operation is indicated by cells hatched in yellow , with the number 1 included. Where there is an overlap, both colours are utilised, giving a green hue. Phase 2 is planned to have 14 beamlines, and the timing is based on the plan presented by Diamond to the Research Councils, OST and the Wellcome Trust on 11 June 2003. 12 of the 14 are indicated in the plan as coming on stream from Year 2 (2008) to Year 5 (mid 2011), and these are also shown in hatched yellow, with the number 2 in them. A further 2 beamlines will be added to the plan (in Year 4, 2010) once they are approved by the Science Advisory Committee. The proposal for Year 2 is a firm one, but those in later years will be tensioned against new proposals. Cells in black represent facilities that will be not available at either source on each scenario. When a station reaches a dark period of more than 2 years, the science area can be considered to be threatened by a lack of continuity of experience. This period is adopted since much of UK science is based upon the 3-year PhD and 2 or 3 year postdoctoral research assistants; a gap of 3 years would thus preclude any overlap period to pass on experience. Such science areas are highlighted in the 3rd column by being in red text in a grey-shaded cell. If Phase 2 is not funded then all the cells marked with a 2 will become black, with a correspondingly sharp increase in the “at risk” research areas.
