Setting Up the Station for Data Collection

A successful experiment depends on the careful setup of the station for the intended work. Good working practice requires keeping an account of the events in the log book provided. Please use it extensively to record relevant experimental parameters as well as logging any problems you may encounter with the station equipment.

The practical steps necessary, before putting the sample on the camera, are the following:

• Ensure a valid, signed, Experimental Risk Assessment (available from the ULO) is displayed on the station.
• Ensure that the hutch can be interlocked, all the valves and shutters are working and that the beam is obtainable in the hutch
• Set up sample cooling equipment, if desired
• Maximise the ion chamber reading
• Create a new directory where your data will be kept
• Check the intersection of the beam with the rotation axis
• Determine the primary beam position and check the distance/wavelength
• Mount the sample and start data collection.
